El Camino Bilingual school began as an experiment, combining home schooling in English with teaching local Spanish-speaking children.  In 2003 it began under a thatched roof, one room schoolhouse with several of the first missionary children of Loma de Luz Hospital, along with five gifted Honduran children.  The first class consisted of local village students and missionary kids who had attended the village school together for two previous years.  The home school curriculum was translated and taught bilingually in Spanish and English for more than 8 years.

As the years pass, the curriculum is modified to meet student needs with a mix of on-line classes, and courses taught by missionaries from Hospital Loma de Luz .   Roughly 25 Honduran elementary students learn English as a foreign language for two afternoons each week, supplementing their public school elementary education.

In 2012, El Camino launched its first Kindergarten class with the goal of becoming a fully accredited bilingual school in the year 2012.  With each new school year the subsequent grade will be added through the 12th grade.  This commitment looms large, since we have teachers in place for just the first year.
